Enhancement of the Properties of BR/EPDM Compounds using Organoclay

Nanocomposites based on BR 50/EPDM 50 /nanoclay were prepared by melt compounding to assess the effect of different percentages of nanofiller (3, 5, 7 & 10 Wt %) on the properties of the samples. From the XRD analysis, elastomer chains could penetrate into silicate layers and consequently enlarge the d-spacing of the layers. Gel content measurements showed that addition of nanoclay particles results in an increase in the crosslink density of the samples and consequently a decrease in the gel content values. The organomodified montmorillonite also improved the mechanical properties (hardness, fatigue to failure and abrasion Loss) of BR/EPDM compounds. These improvements could be ascribed to the established interaction between silicate layers and polymer matrix
