In the application of Gas Insulated Switchgears GIS there is a variety of special environmental concerns : seismic activity 9 extreme heat and cold , salt contamination , industrial pollutions, high density urban areas, etc, since GIS are less influenced by these enviro nmental conditions than conventional substation equipment, it is the answer for many substation applications. This paper describes the technical issues in applying GIS to the special environmental areas : especially contaminated area and seismic area included in the above concerns using out actual installations over the last two decades as examples and the results of factory tests and field tests
