The captive power plants installed with large industrial complexes run in synchronism with the state/regional grid of electrical power systems due to adequacy and reliability considerations. However, in the event of disturbance in the state grid, these plants need to run in an islanded mode of operation. To ensure a smooth and reliable transition from interconnected to islanded operating mode, it is necessary to analyse the interconnected network under different operating conditions and arrive at recommended parameters for islanding. This paper presents the islanding principle derived based on frequency variation and voltage variation studies and the digital simulation results.
