With the availability of reliable micro-processor based controllers, it is now possible to introduce new control algorithms to enable static VAR compensators to enhance power system stability. Some basic points such as maintaining network voltage, damping power oscillations, ... are required to be considered in this regard and this paper attempt to address them. A simple practical example is used to explain the basic strategies available for controlling SVC. The deficiencies of the currently control concept are illustrated and a new concept, based on optimal control is developed.
