چکیده مقاله:

For many years, listening skills did not receive priority in language teaching. Teaching methods emphsized productive skills, and the relationship between receptive and productive skills was poorly understood. It was often assumed that listening skills could be acquired through exposure but not really taught. Today many linguists argue that listening comprehension is at the core of second language acquisition, and therefore demands much greater importance in language teaching. There are many difficulties in listening comprehension realm; therefore more attention should be paid to this area. The purpose of this research is to determine whether teaching critical listening has any effect on improving listening comprehension of EFL intermediate learners and suggest the ways for improving critical listening. In this study a MELAB test was administered to 150 intermediate learners. Seventy learners whose scores fell withine the range of half standard deviation above and below the mean were selected and randomly assigned to two groups; a control group, and an experimental one.In the first session, subjects in both groups sat for pre-test. In the following eight sessions, learners in experimental group followed treatment which was instruction and practice in critical listening. The topic of the listening material was given to the students and ask them to speak about it and to criticize their classmate ideas about the topic. After this a number of questions were presented for them. They read the questions in order to know what details they wanted to listen for. In conrol group, listening was taught to the students traditionally. Before listening, they didnʼt know the topic, So they didnʼt have any background about the topic. The questions which the students had to answer after listening were not presented to them.At the end the subjects in both groups were given a post test. The purpose of the post test was to reveal the impact of the treatment which was implementad during the research. To determine the difference between the learners and to see wether or not this treatment had any effect on listening comprehension of learners, the researcher conducted t-test.the researcher compared the result of performance of each group at the pretest with their performance at the posttest, by using a t-test. Performing t-test revealed a significant increase in performance of subjects in experimental group. This means that teaching critical listening has a significant effect on listening comprehension of learners.
