چکیده مقاله:

Translation is probably is the most complex type of event in the history of cosmos. Translation criticism is even more challenging because compared to translation it stands at even higher height. (Shpak, 2009). The most immediate evaluation comes in the form of good or bad and right or wrong , those being the extreme poles of evaluation but at the same time the vaguest in terms of translation. The main problem seems to reside in how to express quality or what measure should be used for the quality of a translation. Although the question of translation quality has been widely debated in translation studies field, with scholars such as Nord, House, Reiss, empirical and scientific studies are few. There are some international standard systems, but unfortunately their applications on English-Persian translated text are rare. The aim of present study was to introduce a translation quality assessment model which measures translation quality based on error deduction away from prejudice and subjective judgment of raters. The researchers attempted to discover whether Canadian quality assurance system is applicable on English-Persian texts or not. Sical III (the trial and tribulation of the Canadian Government Translation Bureau’s Quality Measurement System) model assesses translations quantitatively by defining error categorization and concise sampling system. In order to achieve such a purpose, Babbit written by Sinclaire Leiws was chosen as a corpus, and Sical III was applied on its translations by Fazlollah Nikayin and Manochehr Badiee. First, source text and target texts were read by two raters (who are translation professors) completely. Second, translations errors (Major, Minor, Translation and Language) were detected by two raters, numbers and weight of errors identified. Then, translations were graded according to Sical’s schedule grading system: A (superior quality; major: 0 minor:6), B (fully acceptable; major:0; minor:12), C (revisable; major:1; minor:18), D (unacceptable; major: more than 1 minor: more than 18). Finally, the novel’s translations criticized by Sical. Nikaiin’s translation with 4 major errors and 25 minor errors obtained grade D (unacceptable), and Badiee’s translation with 1 major and 15 minor errors acquired grade C (revisable). In conclusion, this study proved the applicability of Sical’s model at the micro-textual level on English-Persian literary translations.
