چکیده مقاله:

According to Wardough (1998), in this world, speaking more than one language is just a normal requirement of the daily life and it's not easy to find pure monolinguals. Multilinguals or bilinguals may perform differently from people with experience in only one language (McLaughlin & Nayak, 1989). Therefore, it might be stated that due to different experiences there may be a difference in terms of the use of language learning strategies in general and reading comprehension strategies in particular between monolingual and bilingual L2 learners. Following that perspective, it is important to investigate studies exploring the effects of bilingualism/multilingualism strategy use on their reading comprehension abilities. On the other hand, one of the problems that most learners are complaining about is getting an unacceptable command of reading comprehension even after covering the courses concerning it. The researcher decided to test the effectiveness of strategy training on monolingual and bilingual learners’ reading comprehension. This study was conducted in four EFL pre-intermediate intact classes. First, participants took a proficiency test. Later, four participating groups took a reading pretest. During each session, first the teachers modeled the strategy and then administered the second text to the students to find out if they could employ the strategies independently. In the control group, the teachers gave the text to the students and they were required to read it silently and answer the questions. Then, the teacher read the text aloud. The teachers translated every line of the text and at the end the teachers asked the students to answer the reading comprehension questions of the text. Taken together, findings of the present study reveal an overall beneficial effect of reading strategy training over reading comprehension. This result is in line with findings of a number of previous studies, such as Garcia, 2004, 2005; Nation and McLaughlin, 1986; Ramsay 1980; Swain et al., 1990. The beneficial effect of strategy training on monolingual and bilingual reading comprehension achievement was presented on the post-test where the four groups’ test scores on the post-test was better than the pre-test so the null hypothesis is rejected.
