Generally, the assessment process is a necessary component in teaching. Research found that all learners’ competence couldn’t be measured by traditional assessment, so alternative assessment came into being. One of the alternative assessments is portfolio assessment which is adopted in the process-writing classroom. It will promote not only teaching writing itself, but also assessing the pieces that the students write in the classroom authentically. The present study investigated the effect of portfolio assessment on writing development of language learners. To achieve this purpose, Nelson proficiency test was administered to students who enrolled at writing course in one English institute. Afterwards, they were instructed in the use of portfolio assessment. Among them, 10 students were interviewed at the end of the course. The findings suggested that portfolio assessment improves writing ability of the EFL learners.
