Reading comprehension has been seen to be the result of complex interaction between text, reader, reader background, reading strategy, the L1 and the L2 and readers’ decision-making. Therefore, teaching readers how to use specific reading strategies should be a prime consideration in reading classroom (Anderson, 1993; Oxford, 1990). To teach reading strategies, teachers have to learn how to interact with students at the right time and right place during the reading of a text. The present study aimed at investigating the effect of reading strategies-based instruction on improving university students reading comprehension ability in an ESP context. Participants of this study include 150 ESP university students studying in different academic majors in Islamic Azad university of Malayer within the age range of 19-25.They were randomly assigned to a control and an experimental groups. Data were gathered from participants by using two parallel reading comprehension section tests and strategy inventory for language learning (Oxford, 1990). This study was conducted under the experimental pretest posttest design. The study was conducted from April to June 2013. The descriptive statistics and t-test were run on the data. The reading strategy-based instruction was presented to experimental group during 8 weeks and it was included different tasks such as style matching, learning strategies use exercise, reading restoration, skimming and scanning tasks which are based on Cohen's book (2005). The analysis data showed that there was statistically significant difference in reading comprehension test scores among ESP participants after instruction. Therefore, the reading strategy-based instruction had a positive effect on the ESP learners reading comprehension. It can be implied that when the participants had a lot of information about their reading strategies use in different ESP texts, they can be an effective reader.
