A major area of research in interlanguage pragmatics has long been the difficulties that second language (L2) learners face in acquiring the speech act behavior in the target language (Yu, 2004). One such difficulty is manifest in the way that EFL learners show considerable variation in their perception of the relative power of the interlocutors. The present study investigates the compliment response behavior of Iranian EFL learners across symmetrical (-P) and asymmetrical (+P) power status. The sample of the study consisted of 26 EFL learners, 13 males and 13 females, whose age ranged from 19 to 28. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) including situations of compliments to which the participants responded. The DCT situations included both symmetrical (for example, student-student) and asymmetrical (for example, university professor-student) relations. The compliment response strategies were analyzed and coded using the taxonomy of compliment response strategies in (Yu, 2004). The results indicated that Iranian EFL learners relied on Acceptance and Combination strategies in both symmetrical and asymmetrical statuses with almost the same frequncy and with no significant difference. This finding revealed that the interlocutors' relative power makes no significant difference with regard to the choice of the compliment response strategy. In addition, gender was found to have no significant effect on the compliment response strategies employed except when Ammendment strategies were used. The findings showed that pragmatic transfer from the first language (L1; Persian) was also at work. The study results demonstrated that Iranian EFL learners like the native speakers of English (Americans) tend more to accept rather than reject a compliment whether the addressee is of superior or inferior power relative to them. However, Iranian EFL learners made extensive use of combination strategies (mainly a mixture of acceptance and ammendment strategies), a fact that can perhaps be related to the politeness strategies since, in the Iranian culture, short responses might be thought of as impolite or rude. The study will discuss the implications and further research in this regard.
