چکیده مقاله:

Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest play and among the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature, with a story capable of seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others.Hamlet is a tragedy of a genius caught fast in the toils of circumstances and unable to fling free. Shakespeare unfolds to us the full horror of Hamlet’s situation gradually, adding one load after another to the burden he has to bear until we feel that he must sink beneath it. The apparition in the first scene forewarns us of some strange eruption that threatens the state of Denmark. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most realistic, most modern, tragedy. Hamlet is a character in the play in the fullest sense of the term. He retains a human heart, for all his stateliness, and there is more than a touch of pathos about his majestical figure. I do not claim that Shakespeare believed in ghosts ; we do not know what Shakespeare believed, though it seems by no means improbable that he regarded ghosts as at least a sublunary possibility. Certainly as a poet he believed in this ghost, and determined that his audience should believe in it likewise. The ghost is the linchpin of Hamlet; remove it and the play falls into pieces. All this makes a difficulty for the modern reader since is not apt to take ghosts seriously. Yet, if he wishes to appreciate Shakespeare’s greatest drama to the full, he must not merely attain that willing suspension of disbelief which Coleridge demanded of every reader of poetry; he must if possible share the standpoint of the Elizabethan spectator and watch with his eyes. For Shakespeare spent much thought upon this unique creature of his imagination; he made it an epitome of the ghost-lore of his age. The majesty of buried Denmark is an English spirit and the story of Hamlet turns upon this fact. Thus, unless we can see it as the Elizabethans did, we shall inevitably miss, not only many beautiful touches, but, more important still, matters which concern the plot of the play, to which the Ghost is intimately related, seeing that he is the instrument that sets it in motion. King Hamlet was a spirit, but the spirit of a majestical king and a great soldier, and withal the wandering soul of a loving and much wronged husband, seeking reparation at the hands of his son.
