چکیده مقاله:

Recent research studies on reading have shown that reading is a complex cognitive activity that is indispensable for adequate functioning and for obtaining information. Reading strategy use refers to those mental processes that readers consciously choose to use in accomplishing reading tasks effectively. University students can learn better from the same tasks if they are able to employ suitable strategies. The aim of this study is to investigate and distinguish different reading strategies employed by Iranian ESP university students among different fields of study in 2013. To this end two hundred learners at Islamic Azad University of Malayer in the majors of business management, accounting, industrial and civil engineering were randomly selected. Measure included 50-item reading strategy use questionnaire was used in this study (Oxford, 1990). The questionnaire was translated into Persian by the researchers. Two Iranian doctoral students at Islamic Azad University of Khorasgan (Isfahan) checked item-compatibility between their Persian and English versions. The descriptive statistics and means analysis were used in this study to interpret the data. The analysis of the data showed the following results: 1) The meatcognitive strategies were used most and affective strategies were used least among learners after instruction. 2) the Iranian students used the reading strategies differently according to their academic majors. The results also revealed the students do not know how to use their reading strategies systematically and appropriately, in different reading texts. The findings suggest that the teachers can help learners recognize the power of understanding reading strategies, which can make their EFL reading comprehension quicker, easier, and more effective
