چکیده مقاله:

Throughout history, translation has made inter-linguistic communication between peoples possible. Religious translation, especially translation of holy books, has recently been considered as an important issue within the field of applied linguistics. This study aims at finding out the methods for translating verses that have simile ,in Quran, through the assessment of the ways simile is rendered in Yusuf Ali, Arthur John Arberry, and Mohammad Shaker’s translations. Simile in Arabic rhetoric is an esthetic and skillful mode of discourse whose major pragmatic aims are to clarify an opinion or feeling to bring two significations close to each other and to compare a given entity with another in praise, dispraise, ornamentation, or repugnance. Therefore, simile varies from one text to another in quality, effectiveness, and most importantly, in the impact upon the text receiver. The analysis consists of three examples representing four types of simile. Each translation is analyzed according to the four mostly used types of simile according to Abd al-Ghaher Jorjani’s model. The evaluation of translations follows a linguistic approach based on analysis and comparison. This study shows that in a structure of a verse, all or some parts of simile may be considered, that the deletion(s) or addition(s) in each part of simile, might show one kind of simile; however, at the same time, in its translation one or some parts of simile may or may not occur, and even this addition(s) or deletion(s) in translation might change the complete meaning of holy Quran. Also, the study shows that synopsis simile is the most used method for rendering Quranic similes; however, when being translated, the word which has simile needs to be reduced to its sense, but the lost impact has to be compensated.
