چکیده مقاله:

Intelligible pronunciation plays a pivotal role in conveying the intended meaning but language teachers pay little attention to it. This creates serious difficulties for L2 learners. The aim of the current study is to examine the causes of the errors made by Persian speakers when pronouncing English vowels. Forty female Persian speakers studying English as a foreign language at high school in city of Mashhad, Iran were selected and asked to pronounce 19 words starting with the phoneme /h/ and ending with the phoneme /d/ except for one word containing schwa. In other words, the chosen words were within the phonemic range of h_d including heed, hid, hayed, head, had, who’d, hood, hoed, hawed, hod, hard, hud, heard, hide, hoyed, how’d, here’d, hoored and haired . Their difficulties in pronunciation could be explained in terms of both external and internal reasons. The former were due to their lack of knowledge and awareness of the correct form and, the latter were due to their inability to produce the intended sound even if they knew the correct sound
