چکیده مقاله:

In a recent conference paper, Tymoczko (2007) highlighted the need for Translation Studies to open up ideas from other cultural traditions, and to enlarge translation by developing new concepts and new ways of thinking, as it would give translation new validity and models for practice. Jean Piaget’s early work in cognitive psychology (1967) for example, has inspired scholars such as Seleskovitch and Lederer (1989) to investigate specific translating and interpreting mental processes using a cognitive approach. The links between Translation Studies (TS) and the field of Psychology have become even more prominent in recent years. Scholars have investigated a number of aspects, such as the translator’s role, attitude, decision-making and strategies, in an attempt to gain access to the mind. As Gyde Hansen suggested (2005), decision processes are partly influenced by cognitive and emotional experiences. What goes on in the translator’s mind while s/he is translating versus what scholars had claimed might go on is at least as crucial to the understanding of translation as a comparative analysis of the final product, the translated text, in relation to the source text. The translated text provides a very incomplete and often misleading way into the translation process, hiding both successful strategies and problems. Insofar as it is not possible to directly observe the human mind at work, a number of attempts have been made at indirectly accessing the translator’s mind. In the present study the researcher would endeavor to investigate the relationship between the translator’s personality traits under study (neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and concientiousness) and the quality of translation in narrative texts through a psychological test, neuron inventory test (NEO). Thirty students of translation studies, accordingly, fifteen males and fifteen females were chosen as the participants of the current study. Analyzing NEO and accordingly students’ translations based on the Translation Quality Assessment model presented in this study, it is concluded that there is no relationship between Translators’s Personality and the Quality of Translation. The findings of this study hopefully would be of benefit for the novice translators, translation instructors, and those dealing with the field of translation, who wish to be aware of the process of translation
