Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of untreated high sulfur gas oil produced by an Iranian refinery (Tehran, Iran) with total sulfur content of 7990 ppmw was carried out using hydrogen peroxide – formic acid oxidation system. The influences of various operating parameters including reactiontemperature, hydrogen peroxide/sulfur molar ratio (O/S), and formic acid/sulfur molar ratio(Acid/S) on the desulfurization of gas oil were investigated. The appropriate conditions were found to be the reaction temperature = 80 ºC, O/S = 5, and Acid/S = 30. The achieved desulfurization of the present ODS process under these appropriate conditions was found to be over 97%.
