The dynamics of pipes conveying fluid is reviewed, establishing why this system has become a model dynamical problem. The propagation of the knowledge gained to other problems in fluidstructure interactions involving slender structures and axial flows is then discussed; specifically the dynamics of (i) quasi-cylindrical bodies in axial flow or towed in quiescent fluid; (ii) cylindrical shells containing or immersed in axial flow; and (iii) plates in axial flow. Applications, particularly in the Power-Generation and Offshore Engineering areas, some unexpected when the work was done, are discussed.
