Production-to-order can be considered the prevailing type of production. The reasons can be found in the market circumstances changing in a rapid way. This fact changes the objective functions which determine the evaluation and optimization of production processes. In this paper the authors describe a new approach of the optimization of cutting operations based on technological intensity factor. The paper defines the concept of technological intensity and outlines its connection with the traditional cutting parameters. It shows the change of the objective functions and proposes methods for realization in process planning, as well as real-time shop floor control of manufacturing.
