In this paper by application of an optimization algorithm, a method for optimized design of distribution transformers is presented. The objective function in this optimization problem is the "Total Owning Cost of transformer which is nowadays the best measure for its optimal design, from customer point of view. During the process of this optimized design, three different magnetic Characteristics of core sheets are considered. The operational limitations and also standard requirements are realized as limiting functions in this optimization. For verification, two 315 KVA transformers with 11 KV, 20 KV voltage rating respectively are designed by this method, and its results are compared with classical designs of our transformer industry. Employment of different types of magnetic sheets resulted in considerable reduction of TOC. Even without changing the type of magnetic material in the above mentioned verification designs 7.9 % and 2.3% reduction in TOC are achieved respectively. This work also can be extended to optimized design of Power Transformers.
