New Algorithm for Fault Location in the Series Compensated Power Transmission Lines

This paper introduces a new fault location algorithm for series compensated power transmission lines. Distributed time domain model of the line is used in the algorithm development. In this study, high voltage protection of the series capacitor (normally Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)) is taken into consideration. The suggested technique takes advantage of one terminal voltage and current samples, which do not require filtering of dc offset and high frequency components of the recorded signals. The presented method has been tested using the EMTP/ATI` model of a 400kV, 300km transmission line, which is compensated, by a three-phase capacitor bank in the middle. The simulation results approve the accuracy of the proposed method.
