A new digital method based on linear prediction for protection of high voltage transformers is proposed in this paper. The method is able to detect any internal faults within the transformer in one sampling time interval. That is one millisecond in this paper. Also the method operation to distinguish between internal faults and inrush currents is robust. The method has been implemented on a personal computer using MATLAB. Transformer fault data from EMTP have been emulated to the algorithm to show the effectiveness of the method.
