Paper deals new trends in power industry, especially in the filed of substation automation and protection systems. A contribution to the critical judgement of the main new solutions coming to the market is tried to be made. Evaluation is made based on criteria, most important now at the moment of deregulation and open and strong competition on the electricity market. Analysis is based under assumption, that basic functionalities are applied without sacrificing performance. Brief conclusions are made explaining, which trends have potential to bring bigger benefits and under which conditions.
