Since the beginning of Industrial Revolution and the invention of vehicles and transportation utilities, safety has been a major concern of countries who have invested in advanced infrastructure and transportation systems. In the course of less than a century, we have gone through a number of generations of transportation solutions, and yet traffic safety and incident management remain at the forefront of planning and thinking of such solutions. For this reason and the idea of next generation of transportation solutions for the 21st century, Automated Highway Systems (AHS), and the Intelligent Vehicles Initiative (IVI) were established in the United States with the promise to save lives and improve safety drastically.
