The rapid growth of audio data made the rapid access to it necessary. The need for such accessibility is especially obvious in large music databases. Content analysis is the solution for music database management. Humming is one of the new methods of music content analysis. An Information Retrieval (IR) system has been developed to understand it; namely Query-By-Humming (QBH). The present paper justifies hum-based music retrieval and introduces QBH. The architecture of a QBH system is illustrated. Then, barriers of QBH development are discussed in brief. Finally, it concludes that information scientists should be more familiar with mathematics and computation as underlying causes of QBH.
