Structural empowerment Relationship with Job Burnout among Midwives Working in Maternity Hospital

Introduction & Objectives: Midwives are an important member of the health team, whoare somehow at the forefront of providing health care services and are the key people incommunity health care. However, some of them feel tired and exhausted after a few years ofworking and confronting a host of occupational stress and problems. Knowing the factorsassociated with burnout and preventing it has a significant role in promoting the mentalhealth of working women in this profession. The aim of this study was to investigate therelationship between structural empowerment and burnout among midwives working inmaternity hospitals in Isfahan in year 1396.Method: This cohort study was performed on 282 midwives working in maternity hospitalsin Isfahan. For data collection, Maslach and Jackson burnout inventory was used as well asthe standard working efficiency questionnaire. The correlation coefficient and linearregression analysis were used to analyze the results.Results: Partial correlation coefficients showed a significant reverse relationship betweentotal score of structural empowerment with emotional exhaustion and personalaccomplishment. In the area of emotional exhaustion, four dimensions of structuralempowerment, including information, support, resources and formal power, have asignificant reverse relationship with this area. In terms of personal accomplishment, twodimensions of support and formal power have been statistically significant in this regard.Discussion and Conclusion: In order to maintain mental health of women working inmidwifery and to prevent burnout, the managers should pay special attention to enablingwork environments.
