Dangerous Area for Scorpion Sting in Southern Part of Iran

Background: Scorpion sting is a major medical problem in south of Iran. Hormozgan is one of the most important foci of scorpion sting in southern part of Iran. Annually, about 3000 scorpion sting cases including several deaths reported from this province.Objectives: This study was aimed to determine the fauna of scorpions and scorpion sting in a high risk area of Hrormozgan province.Materials and Methods: Random sampling of scorpions was done by diurnal searching and night catch with the use of UV light during 2015-2016 in Bashagard County. The clinical and demographic data of scorpion sting was obtained by using checklist from Center for Disease Control (CDC) archive in Hormozgan Health Center during 2011-2015. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 21 software.Results: A total of 382 scorpions including 8 species from Buthidae and Hemiscorpiidae families were collected and identified. Mesbuthus phillipsi, H. acanthocercus and O. doriae had the highest distribution, while H. acanthicercus were catch from all sampling sites. A total of 1221 cases of scorpion sting were recorded in health center of Bashagard County, resulted to 4 cases of death. Most of stings were reported during summer.Conclusion: This study showed that the eastern regions of the Hormozgan province in southern Iran are habitat of one of the most dangerous species of scorpions. Therefore, it seems that necessary to design an appropriate program on prevention and treatment management of scorpion sting in order to implementation of education for community members and medical personals
