چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Melatonin is a pleiotropic hormone primarily known for its regulatory role in circadian rhythm and any imbalance in its levels can be related to various metabolic disorders. Melatonin and the genetic variants of Melatonin Receptor 1B (MTNR1B) are reported to be associated with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) susceptibility. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between common variant of MTNR1B (rs10830963) and T2D risk in a group of Iranian population.Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, we genotyped rs10830963 polymorphism of MTNR1B gene in 187 T2D patients and 100 non-diabetic subjects using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).Results: The frequencies of CG and GG genotypes were 36.36% , 21.93% and 28% , 12% in T2D patients and control subjects, respectively. We olso observed that the G allele was significantly higher among T2D patients compared to normal individuals (p=0.0008).Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence that the MTNR1B rs10830963 variant is associated with T2D risk in a group of Iranian subjects.
