چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim: This study was designed to investigate whether garlic tablet is effective in prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) through controlling some CVD risk factors in healthy adults. Methods: The trial included 13 healthy adults in a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over design with 3-week treatment period. Participants received either garlic powder tablets twice daily or two placebo tablets/day for 3 weeks. Height, weight and blood pressure were measured and fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and after each 3 weeks treatment with garlic or placebo. Results: The mean age of participants was 37.66±1.98 years old. After 3 weeks, mean total cholesterol tended to have significant reduction in the garlic group (p= 0.04), and LDL cholesterol increased significantly in the placebo group (p= 0.04). A marker of systemic in ammation (plasma C-reactive protein), blood pressure, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol did not change signi cantly during the study. Conclusion: Three weeks of treatment with garlic powder tablet had some favorable effects on total and LDL cholesterol but did not exert anti-inflammatory or blood sugar-lowering effect in a healthy individuals. The findings of the present study lead us to speculate that in persons with normal lipid profile, garlic have little impact on these cardiovascular risk factors.
