چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim : Methamphetamine (METH) abuse is a large public health and societal problem. Among METH users, women especially during pregnancy may be exposed imposing more hazard during perinatal period. So this study was undertaken to determine the pathological and behavioral alterations in uterus after administration of METH in experimental rats. Methods : Thirty female Wistar rats were randomly categorized to three equal groups of experimental receiving METH (0.4 mg/kg, i.p., 0.2 mL/rat) for 21 days. The sham group was administrated similarly with normal saline (0.2 mL/rat, i.p.) and the control group just received distilled water identically. Histological evaluation was undertaken after 1, 2 and 3 weeks post-interventions. Elevated plus-maze (EPM) using a plus maze, assessed the animals’ behavior by ODLog program. Plantar test was applied to determine the nociceptive sensitivityResults : Seven, 14 and 21 days after METH use, uterine tissue showed atrophy of glands and walls, hyperplasia and papillary formation in the uterus. The anxiety level showed a decrease in the experimental group one week after METH use, regarding the mean percentage of open arm time (OAT), the mean percentages of time spent in the closed arm time (CAT), the mean number of times rats passing from the center, and the number of rats’ peek. This reduction was visible after 2 weeks for OAT, CAT and the mean number of times rats passing from the center. After 3 weeks considering just the number of rats peek, a decrease in anxiety level was noted. Conclusion : METH use resulted in some histological changes in uterine tissue including atrophy, hyperplasia and papillary formation. Using EPM plus maze revealed a reduction in anxiety level mostly after a week following METH use, but after 2, and 3 weeks the difference between groups was not significant.
