Art of dentistry in digital ERA

Background and Objective: People’s tendency to beauty causes an ever increasing auspices and importance of smile designing. Digital smile design (DSD), allows dentists and patients to predict the aesthetical and functional smile rehabilitation outcomes before starting the procedure.The purpose of this research review was to scrutiny smile designing process, go through step-by-step procedure, and introduce and compare different aspects of intra oral scanner, and DSD technology.Materials and Methods: The available clinical studies from 2000 to 2018 were reviewed through PubMed, Medline, and Scopus databases applying following keywords: Digital Smile Design, CAD smile design, facial scan, and DSD software or a combination.Finding: Digital smile design improves esthetic results predictability and patients’ satisfaction, facilitates patient-clinician communication, and widens the dental team’s diagnostic vision. However, it has its own indications, coins and pros that should be discussed.Conclusion: DSD provides the ability to predict the prosthetic results and applying patient’s comments before starting the procedure. The previsulization make it possible to coincide the final result with patient’s expectancy, which cause a great enhancement in patient’s satisfaction level
