Comparison Between Two Educational Interventions on Knowledge, Attitude And Practice of Gynecologists and Midwives about Oral and Dental Health of Pregnant Women in Birjand

Background and Objective: Knowledge, attitude and practice of gynecologists and midwives about oral and dental health of pregnant women especially about the association of periodontal disease and adverse effects during pregnancy is not high enough in Iran. The purpose of this study was to compare between two educational interventions on knowledge, attitude and practice of gynecologists and midwives about oral and dental health of pregnant women in Birjand.Materials and Methods: This semi-empirical qualitative study was conducted in gynecologists and midwives in Birjand. 90 gynecologists and midwives were chosen and divided into 3 equal 30-person groups(control, educational pamphlet and clip) by accident. The questionnaire was given to 3 groups first before the intervention and then 2 months after that.Finding: The average of knowledge, attitude and practice score of the participants at the beginning of the study was 6.27±1.33, 19.43±2.10 and 4.32±1.35. Intervention and control groups were similar in terms of age, years after graduation, practice record, number of patients, field of study, service location and weekly work hours. The average of mentioned items in intervention and control groups was similar before the intervention; And after the intervention in pamphlet group was 8.23±1.01, 21.13±0.97 and 4.93±0.87 and in clip group was 8.97±0.93, 21.5±0.6 and 4.5±1.46. Knowledge and attitude score in both the intervention groups after the intervention, was higher than the score before the intervention(P<0.001) while the raise in practice score was not significant.Conclusion: The result of the study shows that proper training can be useful to increase the information of gynecologists and midwives. According to the participants’ opinions, one of the best ways of training is using dentistry specialists for holding meetings and training sessions.
