چکیده مقاله:

Pre-eclampsia is a very serious complication of pregnancy and can cause severe morbidity and mortality in women and neonates. Magnesium supplementation was shown to decrease the risk of seizure and prevent eclampsia. But the results of studies are inconclusive. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to systematically review current literature on the impact of magnesium supplementation on pre-eclampsia.Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science were searched for clinical trials until 5 Feb 2019 using the following keywords: Pre-Eclampsia , Pregnancy-induced hypertension , Diet , Magnesium , Mg without any filters activated. Blood pressure was considered as the primary outcome. Results: After excluding non-eligible articles, six randomized clinical trials(RCTs) evaluating the effect of magnesium supplementation during pregnancy remained. 4 articles did not find any significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and only two articles reported significant reduction in systolic blood pressure after magnesium supplementation. But magnesium supplementation was more effective on diastolic blood pressure since three articles reported significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure after magnesium supplementation. Different supplement regimens were used in RCTs. Three articles evaluated the effect of magnesium supplementation after delivery and the result revealed that magnesium supplementation after delivery was not effective in controlling systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Magnesium supplementation after delivery has no effect on blood pressure. During pregnancy, magnesium supplementation might help controlling systolic and diastolic blood pressure, but still further studies are needed to reach a conclusion. Also, there are not enough data on the proper time and dose of magnesium for recommendations.
