The Effect of Henna Extract (Lawsoniainermis) on Cleft Wound Healing: A Systematic Review

Background and Objective: Wounds with partial disruption of body tissues disrupt the nutrition system of the area; also provide a suitable location for the growth and development of the microorganism; from this combination of treatments that can heal the wound with minimal side effects and costs Importantly, the evidence suggests that the use of henna extract is helpful in accelerating the process of wound healing; therefore, a review study was conducted to evaluate the effect of henna extract on wound healing.Materials and Methods: Review of texts in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (Ovid) and EMBASE (Ovid) databases in English and Google Scholar SID, Iran medex databases, in Persian with Keywords, Lawson iainermis, healing, Essential Oil and wound was performed without time limit. Inclusion criteria included placebo-controlled clinical trials, a variety of methods of administration of henna extract with or without conventional treatment. The full text of articles related to human clinical trial studies as well as the results of the studies were independently reviewed by two researchers and after screening related articles (30 articles) were selected and used in the present study.Results: Evidence from 60% of studies indicated that henna leaves contain chitosan derivatives and have high potential for use as wound dressing, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Topical application of henna extract causes severe anti-inflammatory activity and decreases macrophage and neutrophil accumulation. It also enhances fibroblast proliferation and collagen production and activates fibroblast cells in polygon shape and is very effective in wound healing.Conclusion: Rapid healing of cleft ulcers is important due to its side effects. Therefore, it can be used to reduce the rate of infection and rapid healing of wounds of henna extract. Therefore, further research on the healing effects of this plant is recommended.
