Wound Healing In HIV+ Patients

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a major cause of burden to health care systems worldwide. HIV+ patients are at risk for many complications which may require surgical intervention and leads to impaired wound healing.Methods: Pubmed and Google Scholar were searched systematically based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. Records were screened and clinical studies investigated wound healing in HIV+ patients were included.Results: Four prospective and two retrospective studies were included. Investigation of wound healing in HIV+ patients with anorectal, genital and trauma surgery were reported in three, two and one studies respectively. HIV infection leads to an increase of time to complete wound healing and delayed wound healing was associated with wound complications and infections in most of the studies. In two studies CD4 count and one study CD8 were correlated with delayed wound healing.Conclusion: HIV+ patients are at risk for wound complications and should receive more attention for their wound cares to prevent delayed wound healing.
