Relationship between nurses’ knowledge and quality of nursing care in prevention of pressure ulcer in intensive care units of Hospitals of Bojnord City

Background and Aim: Pressure ulcer is one of the most common complications in critical care patients. Nursing staffs are responsible for patients skin care and preventive measures for pressure ulcers. The quality of nursing care is a key factor in the prevention of pressure ulcers. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between nurses knowledge and quality of nursing care in prevention of pressure ulcer in Intensive Care Units of Hospitals of Bojnord City. Methods and Materials: In this cross-sectional study, all Intensive Care nurses of Imam Hassan and Imam Ali hospitals of Bojnourd were selected through survey sampling method and based on inclusion criteria from December 2017 to April 2018. The tool has three parts: demographic, knowledge assessment questionnaire and quality of nursing care assessment checklist. Content validity, Kuder-Richardson for the questionnaire and inter-rater coefficient reliability for the checklist were calculated. The quality of nursing care of each nurse was observed by a researcher three times in different morning and evening and night shifts. Prior to the first observation, the knowledge assessment questionnaire was completed by the nurse. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics. Results: Twenty nine nurses were included in the study and twenty eight of them (96.6%) were female. All of the nurses had low level of knowledge about prevention of pressure ulcer. The quality of nursing care in twenty six (89.7%) nurses was undesirable. There was no significant correlation between knowledge and quality of nursing care (P> 0.05).Conclusion: Knowledge and quality of nursing care are at low level. Lack of clear clinical guidelines, shortage of nursing staff and equipment and inadequate training and supervision are relating factors.
