Improving IR Performance Using Intelligent Query Expansion

Although search is the most important function for web users, but quality of results by search engines are not satisfactory. Therefore improvements of information retrieval systems are very important. This paper introduces some new ideas for adding semantics using a general purpose ontology to the information retrieval process. The results of applying the ideas on a real test collection is presented and discussed. They show considerable improvements over currently available methods.
