Occult breast lesions in reduction mammoplasty samples

Reduction mammoplasty is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery.Histologic examination of reduction mammoplasty samples rarely detects occult malignancy, atypical and pre-malignant lesions or benign lesions. In the present study,reduction mammoplastysamples received in the department of pathology of Ali EbnAbitaleb hospital in Rafsanjan city, since 2 years ago,were examined for the presence of occult lesions. The most common lesion was diagnosed as fibrocystic disease.Careful macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of reduction mammoplasty samples for rule out of occult lesions, especially malignant and pre-malignant lesions is recommended.
