چکیده مقاله:

Introduction and objective: Hypercholesterolemia is one of the important factors in the progression of cardiovascular diseases. Since hypercholesterolemia can cause damage to various tissues, the damage to tissues of heart, liver, and skeletal muscles will result in the increased rate of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activity. Fennel herb is known by the scientific name, Foeniculum vulgare. In this experimental study, the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds on the level of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activity in adult male hypercholesterolemic rats’ heart tissue is assessed. Materials and Methods: A number of 28 adult male rats with the average weight of 150-170 g were divided at random to four groups of control, hypercholesterolemia, treated control with the hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds and treated hypercholesterolemia withhydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds. The rats of groups 2 and 4 received a high-fat diet with 1% cholesterol for 8 weeks. Then, by taking blood from eye venous plexus and confirming the hypercholesterolemia model for 3 weeks, they were treated intraperitoneally with hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds at a dose of 150 mg/kg. At the end,the rats’ hearts were removed and homogenized, then, the level of lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activity was measured. Results: Treatment of rats receiving normal diet and the hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds with an enzymatic activity of 125 U/l has resulted in significant reduction in comparison with the control group 415 U (P <0.01). In addition, high-fat food intake by rats for two months with an activity of 700 U/l resulted in significant increase in comparison with the control group (415 U/l) (P < 0.01). On the other hand, reduced activity of this enzyme in the group receiving the high-fat food and hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds with an activity of 150 U/l in comparison with the high-fat group 700 U/l was observed (P < 0.005). Conclusion: the results of this study indicated that the prescription of the hydroalcoholic extract of fennel seeds to normal or high-fat dietary intake rats will result in reduced activity of lactate dehydrogenase of heart tissue that could protect heart and blood circulation system.
