چکیده مقاله:

Background Transfusion of blood component can be life-saving. Recently, much attention has been directed on the appropriate blood transfusion and patient blood management; that can reduce transfusion of blood components and subsequently, demands for blood collection. Aims The aim of this study was to determine changes in blood center distributions and hospitals demands for blood components in Yazd province over the past four years. Methods Blood collection, health provider demands and distribution data were collected over a 4 year period from 2013 through 2016 in Yazd provincial blood center. Results In 2016, we supplied 39,973 blood units with an increase of 3% in blood collection compared to 2013. During the study period, increase in distributed RBCs, Plasma and Platelet units was 7, 22 and 22 percent respectively. Improvement in wastage reduction within the blood center and receiving plasma from other blood centers were contributing to meet more than 90% of hospital demands. Distribution of O – RBCs increased for 3.5%. Conclusions Overall blood component demands and distributions have increased over time. Compared to 2013, blood collections increased significantly in 2016 and disproportionately to the significant increase in RBCs distribution. Improving appropriate blood transfusion and patient blood management in health care centers are intensely needed.
