چکیده مقاله:

Background & Objectives: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disorder which is mediated by immune system. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn s disease (CD) are two main types of IBD. The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease has been reported as 200 in 100 thousand people, in Western countries. Despite numerous studies in the area of etiology of these diseases only the role of smoking and appendectomy in reducing the incidence of ulcerative colitis and aggravating effect of smoking on Crohn s disease have been found so far.Understanding the epidemiological features of the disease can be effective on the managing process of the disease. So, we decided to evaluate IBS epidemiological schema and pathologic indicators in Yazd, central province of Iran. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on the patients who presented at pathology ward in Yazd hospitals with the diagnosis of Ulcerative colitis or Crohn s disease during 2008 to 2016. All data were inserted to relevant check lists and were analyzed by statistical software SPSS v19. Results: Of the 354 patients entering the study, 336 patients were diagnosed as ulcerative colitis and 18 had Crohn s disease. 202 (60.1%) of patients with ulcerative colitis and 15 (83.3%) of patients with Crohn s disease were male. The most common symptoms of patients with ulcerative colitis include bloody diarrhea and rectorhalgia (80.7%) and bloody or non-bloody diarrhea in patients with Crohn s disease was prominent among all symptoms (61.1%). The highest incidence of Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis referred to the age group 60-69 years. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study it seems that the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease is higher in advanced age groups with the highest incidence in the sixth decade of life. So checking the patients in order to diagnosis and treatment of such diseases among these age groups can lead to appropriate treatment and improving the quality of life in these patients.
