Pterygium Surgery and Role of Limbal Stem Cells and Conjunctival Autograft Transplantation

Purpose: Limbal stem stem cells are important factor in the pathogenesis of pterygium. We aimed to present the efficacy of limbal stem cells and conjunctival autograft transplantation during pterygiun excision. Methods: Twenty-one eyes of 21 patients with grade II-III pterygium were included. Pterygium excision surgery was performed and followed by limbal stem cells autograft supratemporaly. Recurrence and complications rate within a mean follow-up period of 12 months was studied. Results: Recurrence of pterygium occurred in only one eye. There were no significant complications Conclusion: Limbal stem cells and conjunctival autograft transplantation is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of grades II-III of pterygium
