Dynamics behavior of power systems and specially Automatic Generation Control (AGC) systems areaffected by the physical constraints. Communication delay is one of these constraints which is created because of the utilization of the communication systems for transmitting and receiving control signals. Governor dead band is another limitation which is considered when by changing the input signal, the speed governor do not react immediately until the input reaches a specified level. Another important physical constraint is the rate of power generation due to the limitation of thermal and mechanical movements which is referred to as Generation Rate Constraint (GRC). In this paper the effects of communication delay, speed governor dead band and GRC in a two-area AGC system are studied and optimized PI controller gains are obtained by using Imperialistic Cometitive Algorithm (ICA).
