Solid Waste Management Challenges in Metropolitan Areas of Karaj, IRAN

The ever-increasing growth of Karaj metropolitan area, a neighboring city of Tehran, the capital city of I.R. Iran, gives rise to problems concerning solid waste management in the region. The related authorities have to function under pressed and constraints situations, particularly in regard to uncontrolled population growth. The infrastructure, financial resources, generally falls far short of requirements for planning and sustaining an effective waste management services. This paper aims to, first; identify the weak operation of waste management and second; find a better and optimal utilization of the same management. Also it emphasizes that the answer lies not only in adopting a single strategy, but rather in the integration of prevention, recycling and treatment solutions in the context outlined
