The effect of surgery on weight loss in obese patients in the first trimester after operation in Madar va Koodak Ghadir Hospital of Shiraz (February 2017 to February 2018)

IntroductionObesity and overweight are one of the most pressing public health problems worldwide. Obesity accounts for 0.7%-2.8% of the total health care costs of different countries. Different ways have been suggested to treat obesity, the most effective of which being surgery. The most important goal in obesity surgery is to achieve optimal weight and maintain it. The cost of obesity surgery in public and private hospitals in Tehranhas been $ 716.77 and $ 720.47, respectively. Due to high expense of these surgical procedures it is very important to achieve and maintain weight loss. In the present study, the effect of surgery on weight loss in .obese patients in the first three months after surgery is investigatedMaterial & Methods In this descriptive study, 170 patients who underwent surgery from February 2017 to February 2018 in Madar va Koodak Ghadir Hospital of Shiraz were evaluated for weight loss in the first trimester after sur- .gery based on their patient profileResultsIn this study 39 men (22.9%), 131 women (71.1%) and the whole case of 170 patients were examined. The mean age in this group was 36.9 ± 11.2, the mean BMI before operation was 44.4 ± 5.6, and also in the BMI classification, the highest frequency, being 150 patients (88.2%), belonged to severe obesity (BMI≥40). Sleeve gastrectomy Surgery method was the most commonly used surgical procedure, comprising109 cases (64.1%). The mean weight before and after surgery was 122 ± 21.9 and 97.4 ± 17.3, respectively, which displayed significant difference in the mean weight before and after operation (p≤.05), using Pair-t Test. The findings showed that after weight loss surgery in obese patients, the average weight loss in .the first three months after surgery was 24.6 ± 8.9 Kgs Conclusion Based on the results of this study, a variety of obesity surgeries can have a significant effect on weight .loss in the first three months after surgery
