Listeriosis: Recent trends and perspectives

Listeriosis is an infection caused when one ingests bacteria called Listeriamonocytogenes. It is an infection that mainly affects pregnant women, people at the extremesof the age bracket i.e. newborns and the elderly and people with weak immune systems..Although it affects people with compromised immune systems, it can also affect healthypeople if they ingest a large dose of the bacterium. Infection can also occur from mother to anunborn foetuses, if the mother is already infected; the fetus gets infected as it is passingthrough an infected birth canal or if the amniotic membrane is ruptured. However, in somescenarios, the infection can progress leading to life threatening complications; like infectionin the blood (e.g. septicima) and/or inflammation around the brain in membranes and fluids(meningitis). The bacteria is dangerous since it can survive prolonged refrigeration, it alsosurvives long in a food processing ,hence continuously infected food as they areprocessed.
