چکیده مقاله:

The dinoflagellates of genus Ceratium Schrank make the greatest contribution to phytoplankton populations in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. However, an insignificant number of papers were published about dinoflagellates of Iranian waters of these water bodies. The aim of the present research is to enhance the knowledge about dinoflagellates of Ceratium providing comments on species composition, morphology and distribution. Materials were collected in waters surrounding Hormuz Island located in the Strait of Hormuz in January and July 2015. Totally, 27 species and 39 infra-specific taxa were revealed. Among them 11 infra-specific taxa were found in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for the first time. Overall, the cell lengths of genus Ceratium were longer than were described in identification keys and it points to high trophicity of the investigated water area. The future seasonal algofloristic investigations of Iranian waters in the vicinity of Hormuz Island will allow an increase in the checklist of dinoflagellate genus Ceratium not only for this water area, but also for the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman as a whole
