Comparative study of changes in histomorphology of ovaries in mice of polycystic ovary syndrome after treatment with parsley water extract and clomiphene citrate

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorder with oxidative stress and inflammation in ovarian tissue, which causes ovulation in 5 to 10% of women of reproductive age. Regarding the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of parsley, this study was conducted to determine the effect of parsley water extract on the morphology of ovarian tissue in a rat model of the polycystic ovarian syndrome and its comparison with clomiphene citrate. In this study, 40 Wistar female Wistar rats weighing 180-170 gr were randomly divided into groups: control, PCOS control,PCOS groups treated with parsley water extract (concentrations of 1000, 2000, 4000 milligrams g/kg) and the PCOS group treated with clomiphene citrate for 21 days. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) was induced with a single injection of estradiol valerate (4 mg/kg). At the end of the study, the ovaries of animals were examined by histology. Histological studies showed a significant increase in the number of primary, pre-enteral and cystic follicles compared to the control group (P<0.05). Measurement of Granulosa, Theca, cyst number and diameter, and different follicles showed significant improvement in the polycystic ovary in rats treated with parsley water extract and clomiphene citrate. These findings suggest that parsley extract has a protective effect on polycystic ovary syndrome due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
