چکیده مقاله:

Citalopram is an antidepressant drug of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class that used to treat mood disorders and treatment for severe depression disorders. Results of different studies show that antidepressant drugs with sex hormones affect both sexes, in particular the female. So far no report has been published on the effect of citalopram on the ovarian structure and sex hormones of female mice. therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of citalopram on ovarian structure and sex hormones in female mice s. In this study effects of citalopram in 20 mg/kg/day doses on the oogenesis of NMRI mice in the estrus phase was investigated. In our experiments, Citalopram was injected intraperitoneal to mice in 6 weeks age in one period of 30 days. After one month, injection mices were killed and the ovaries were removed to morphologically and histologically study then lenght and diameter of ovaries were measured. The ovaries were placed in Buens fixture for 16 hours and coloring was carried out using Hematoxylin Eosin staining.Using microtom, tissue sections of the ovaries were prepared and examined. The results demonstrated that significant difference between experimental and control groups was observed( P<0.05). this teratogenic effects involved : decrease in number and diameter of corpus luteum, decrese in primary follicles, decrese in primordial follicles, decrease in growing follicles, decrese in graaf follicles, increase in number of atretic follicle, increase in ovaries weight, increase in ovaries diameter and decrease in diameter of granulosa layer. Progesterone also was evaluated. The obtained results show that the amount of progesterone in experimental groups were decreased but amount of other hormone ( esterogen, FSH, LH) were not altered
