Social Sustainability Criteria and its Impacts on Urban Neighborhoods

In a social setting, segregation is placed against integration. While segregation is a big threat for the society and its members’ mental health and subsequently their physical health because of its negative nature of disported sense from social reality, integration between different communities helps the society to improve its quality in every aspects. The existence of a diversity of people with different backgrounds and different points of view in a society makes a dynamic ground for their integration that enhances social concordance and reduces social tensions. Social sustainability is one of the subcategories of sustainable development that has received less attention in compare to other subcategories such as economic and environmental sustainability. Social interaction is one of the main basis of social sustainability that has a significant impact in human life quality. Now the question is what parameters provide a platform for social mixing to happen Where these social interactions might take place Which criteria should an urban environment have in order to be a ground for interaction The project aims to study and to find specific characteristics and the effective factors on the social sustainability of a neighborhood, focusing on the point that essence of diversity and social mixing besides providing an intercultural context and providing safety and vitality can result in a more socially sustainable neighborhood.
