In this paper an evolutionary algorithm named Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm (COA) and Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) are employed for coordinated and uncoordinated tuning of damping controllers for the low frequency oscillations (LFO) in the power system. This power system includes the Voltage Source Converter-High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) and the power system stabilizer (PSS) controllers to improve damping of critical modes. The proposed technique is applied to enhance the damping of the power system low frequency oscillations (LFOs) and results are compared with conventional design method. Optimal parameters of VSC-HVDC supplementary controllers are found by COA and SFLA algorithms. In addition, for identifying the most effective damping control signal of VSC-HVDC supplementary controllers Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method is adopted. The novel proposed controllers are evaluated on an AC/DC power system. Investigating the simulation results show that the coordinated COA-based controllers have a good capability in damping power system low frequency oscillations and improve the dynamic stability of the power system considerably. To evaluate the system performance, different operating conditions are considered and results depict the effectiveness of the proposed controllers. The advantage of the suggested procedure is intensively enhancing the dynamic response of the system. Furthermore, the proposed method reduces the overshoots, undershoots and the settling times dramatically. Analysis of the system performance shows that the proposed method has excellent response to different faults that may occur in power system.
